Because tattoos are placed fairly deeply under the skin, previous removal methods (including excision, dermabrasion, chemical removal, and the earliest lasers) caused unacceptable levels of scarring. Today, newer lasers are more gentle, more effective, and less likely to lead to scarring, making this the treatment of choice for removing tattoos. At Advanced Laser & Skin Center we use the Candela Alex Trivantage Laser. It is Candela’s most powerful Alexandrite Q-switched laser. The Alex Trivantage uses three wavelengths of energy (755, 532 and 1064), making it possible to treat virtually a tattoo of any color. The pigment in the tattoo absorbs the laser’s light, breaking up the areas of dye. The body’s immune system then removes the shattered pigment over the next several weeks, leading to visible lightening of the tattoo.
